What is i586 ?

Hum... ok this sounds like a stupid question but... what is i586 ? The Mandrake 9.0 is designed for i586 architecture. But what's it ? I found the following list, but no i586 in it.

The following is a list of architectures and the processors that go along with them :

i386 Intel, AMD
m68k The Motorola 680x0 series
Alpha DEC's (Compaq's) Alpha
ARM ARM
PPC IBM PowerPC (Mac G3 & G4)
SPARC Sun SPARC
Source Source Code (Not compiled)

i386 for 386 and up to the latest P4 and AMD's.

i585 for P1's and up

i686 for PPro and up

It's just that the i686 has been optimized for the faster processor.

They all work for AMD.

Actually quite a bit.

Don't ask me about programming, most networking questions, printer problems, modems, Samba etc. etc. etc.

If I know the answer, I try to reply. If I don't know the answer, I still try to provide a suggestion where you might find it (G4L).
