I recently saw a remote terminal program running in red hat where you could log onto win2k server and run programs via a network. I'm pretty sure it was called footsteps but i got a few million odd hits for footsteps in google. and an hour of searchin here wasnt much help either.
do any of you guys out there know a program like this that runs on slackware. and where i can find some info about it and exactly wot it can do?
cheers
Hi,
I tried rdesktop (Remote Desktop) on Mandrake 9.1 to connect to WinXP Pro computer. Works really well, I think it connects faster than Remote Desktop program on Windows. It is rather smooth, although I think windows program is slightly smoother (I mean movement of mouse pointer etc). Colors are not the same as on my windows desktop but its OK.
In description of the rdesktop it said that it also works with W2k.
I hope it helps.

rdekstop rocks, but there are also variations of VNC. And for getting a Linux gui on a Windows machine, you can always forward your X sessions across ssh to a win32 x server.

b3b,
wot r u running at the winxp end of ur network. also if someone wants to use ur winxp machine as a normal desktop can that notice any performance drop? and wot if ur using rdesktop at the same time?
does it also open a new window under kde, for example, and u can physically see the desktop as it would be laid out for the profile of the user u logged in as?
Hi,
Thats the beauty of rdesktop - you don't have to run anything special on WinXP (I don't know about W2k though), all you have to do is enable remote desktop connection. Otherwise everything is built in by default.
I don't think you can use rdesktop if someone is using computer (at least not with Windows version). Or to be more correct: nobody can use computer if you log in with rdesktop because it locks system as soon as you log in. This is as much as I know about this...
But as far as I know about other similar programs, VNC for example, they also can be used only by one user at a time and what I don't like with VNC is that it does not lock system and all your actions are visible on the remote screen (well, maybe I just don't know how to configure it correctly). There are other issues with VNC, for example if password protected screen saver kicks in then there are some troubles to establish connection.
Concerning kde:
you can either work in window or use full screen (or switch between those but I would start with full screen first and then switch to window mode). To start connection in full screen mode you should use option "-f". Otherwise what you see looks exactly as if you work in fron of your Windows workstation. Although in my case colors were somehow different and I got it only in 256 color mode (well, window layout looked more like Win98 than WinXP). But I don't mind because apart of that it worked really good and I could run anything I wanted on that windows machine...

well then, it sounds like rdesktop is exactly wot i need. one final question: wen i run say a game. does it run on the remote computer and seend woteva's on the screen to the client? and is there anyway to change its? so all the computing is done on the client?
Hi,
As far as I know everything you run via rdesktop is working on remote computer and you get only display copy (I yhink in windows version of Remote Desktop even sound worked but I don't know about Linux).
I don't think you can set it up in a way that program loads in memory of client and runs there.
