make patch-o-matic

Well, i tried making a patch-o-matic when i installed 2.4 and it failed :( on boot up i can see 'unresolved' errors for each of the things i choose. I'm gonna install the latest kernel, and i was hoping someone could give me complete directions on what to do. Here's what (i think) i did.
Downloaded kerenl source, tar -xzvf
install kernel
learn i needed to patch-o-matic it
downloaded netfilters and make patch-o-matic
make oldconfig for my kernel
boot up with errors :/
any help would be appreciated

ignore the top part, i got it down to this:
the iptables install:
make
make install
when do i make patch-o-matic? I'm gussing you do that instead of make, but i'm not sure

i have almost the same problem! I want to get TTL target and I have to patch the kernel sources! I downloaded these files:
TTL.patch, TTL.patch.config.in, TTL.patch.configure, TTL.patch.help, TTL.patch.makefile
I have kernel 2.4.19 and I really don't know what to do with these files...?!??!?!!!!!!!!!!! HEEEELP!
