i got mplayer-0.90-fr2.i386.rpm from shrike.freshrpms.net
[root@localhost rh9]# rpm -ivh mplayer-0.90-fr2.i386.rpm
warning: mplayer-0.90-fr2.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e42d547b
error: Failed dependencies:
libpostproc = 0.90-fr2 is needed by mplayer-0.90-fr2
libpostproc.so.0 is needed by mplayer-0.90-fr2
[root@localhost rh9]#
rpmfind.net only has the ppc version of libpostproc....

while you are there at freshRPMs.net go ahead and grab "apt" for redhat.
after installing apt open a terminal and su root and type:
apt-get update
stuff will scroll by
then type:
apt-get install mplayer
it will solve dependencies for you
if you want a gui for apt type:
apt-get install synaptic and from there you will have synaptic to gui install whatever you like from freshrpms or if you like you can add other software(redhat version) repositories. giving you a good selection of software to install without worrying about dependencies.
in any event I don't know anyone that ever regreted installing apt and synaptic.

use synaptic to install mplayer you won't run into that problem another tip would be to install the software development packages as well as the kernel development packages from yout base install CDs. you can use the system settings->add/remove programs for that. many needed dependency files are included with those packages.
