I've got :

Freetype2
imlib2-1.0.6
libast-0.5
Eterm-0.9.2
slackware 9.0

I did a ./configure make make install on freetype2, but imlib2 still won't see freetype and errors our when I try to do a ./configure.

If I try to ./configure Eterm it says I need libast, even though libast has already been installed with no error messages.

I've done /sbin/ldconfig several times and everytime I do an install..

What's the freaking trick here? I'm about to pull my hair out!

Check out this thread (http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94987). Maybe it will help, maybe it won't. I more or less posted what I did to get Eterm working in Slackware 9. Take note of the order that the dependencies were installed, since that turned out to be an important factor.

does your ld.so.conf contain the path to where you installed imlib, libast, and other libraries. if you did not configure the packages you installed to goto say /usr then they will likely default to /usr/local. therefore ld.so.conf should contain the path /usr/local/lib foor the packages you want to install to "see" what you have installed.

My money is on Sarah's response.

My money is on Eterm having way too many dependencies and Imlib2 being a hateful piece of crap.

That thread of C_Pac's shed some light on the problems I had installing Eterm. My problem was that I couldn't get Imlib2 to build because it kept giving errors that it couldn't find Imlib2. Well, no kidding! But apparently Imlib2 1.0.5 really is required to build Imlib2 1.0.6, which is quite possibly the most brain-dead thing I've ever heard of. I'm not sure who came up with this idea, but somebody needs to beat him in the head with a clue stick for a few hours.

As to the actual problem, as long as you have Imlib2's dependencies installed, you could always end up doing what I did: give up in disgust and install the binaries. (Of course, half of them can't be converted using rpm2tgz, so I hope you have RPM installed!) If you're still feeling *****ious, though, try C_Pac's method.

well i can tell for certain that actually eterm has very few dependecies compared to other even more basic apps. for me imlib2 was a snap to install as was libast and eterm. at the time i had very little experience building packages.

perhaps instead of spending time spewing hateful banter you could take the time to email the developers and inquire as to why things are the way they are. if you talk to the developers you can learn a great deal. afterall they may be doing what makes sense to them and without the proper (and polite) feedback persisting issues may never get tackled.

Maybe the problem is with Freetype2. I can't remember what machinations led me to what finally worked, but I seem to remember that there was a reason I used Freetype1.
