I'm thinking about experimenting with one or the other. Which do you recommend? I probably won't be using the X11 interface -- just from the command-line (i.e. rxvt inside of X).

Which do you think is better and why?

Vim. If you ABSOLUTELY want something emacs-like, get jed.

Guys, if you're not going to help me, don't bother posting.

(I already use vim, I'm looking to try something else.)

Emacs inside of X works good...just use the -nw command so it doesnt load the X version of emacs(much faster that way). I actually prefer CodeCommander over Xemacs anyday of the week.

Emacs...the worlds greatest editor.
