Pointer=White Square?

After finally getting my Linux box working (took me several months of tinkering with hardware), I can now get it to boot correctly, and even load GNOME and KDE. However, instead of having a handy little arrow-style mouse pointer, I have a big white blank square. I can kind of guess where the pointer is inside that square, but I get the impression that there is a more convenient pointer icon to use.

Problem is, I'm the ubern00b, and I have no idea how to fix this. Any suggestions are welcome.

And I apologize in advance if this question has been asked and answered repeatedly. I didn't find it in my search.
