using lokkit or the standard security gui i cannot seem to turn off the firewall? every time i do and then check the gui it says it is set to HIGH..

i am having problems with an xp machine giving permissions errors when trying to access a samba server on this linux box which i suspect is tied in to this problem.

any help greatly appreciated.

You should be able to turn off iptables/lokkit via chkconfig I believe.

Hlrguy's signature has a little diddy on this, but your red hat 8 firewall configuration gui does set your firewall to whatever you set it to, its just that when you load it, it shows you what it assumes you want, not what your firewall is actually set to. RH8 uses iptables by default though, and you might be able to find a tutorial on it. I hear ipchains is supposed to be easier to configure, but not as intricate.
