i'm running Debian on a 486 everything runs fine. i don't have a high speed connection to download the entire package so i installed only the base files from floppy.

i now have an ftp server running on it so that i can transfer files from my other machine (Redhat) to the 486 box (Debian).

I can ftp from Debian box to the Redhat box but can't do the same the other way around.

sometimes it connects but doesn't show login prompt or anything then it times out and disconnect.
and when it finally does connect, it takes really long time to respond to any command.

can anyone help me find out what could be causing it to run so slow? thx.

It's a slow machine. Some things are better left in the dump. Go find yourself a nice p100 box and fire it up. Cheap, simple, and it will be plenty fast enough for anything you might want to do. ;)

I don't think an ftp dameon is that hard on the cpu/mem. Your 486 should have decent enough hardware to handle that.

But perhaps not.

Run top and see how much memory the ftp server is taking up after you login from the red hat box.
