Depending on the distribution you have and what you plan on running your Linux system for, the 2+ gigs free should be enough. If you want to partition your hard drive without erasing everything, Partition Magic is a great product. Very simple too.

I have a couple of recommendations that may save you some trouble - always make sure you have *working* bootdisks for any OS already installed beforehand, and of course back up any data you want to keep before messing with your partition table and doing a new linux install. Occasionally products like Partition Magic and System Commander can throw a monkey wrench in the works, I'd go with linux partitioning tools and plain ole LILO to boot the system. Otherwise, a 2.7 - 3 gb partition should be more than enough for most linux installs, and you'll end up formatting your drive, reinstalling several distros over and over before you decide on a setup that you want to keep anyway. Have fun!
