how do I copy an error message from a file to a post?

With the left mouse button, highlight the text you want to copy, then move the mouse to where you want to paste it and click the middle mouse button or left and right click at the same time if you use Emulate3Buttons.

If you're using KDE or GNOME, cut & paste for apps specific to those interfaces is very much like Windows. In a lot of text boxes, you can probably right-click and copy the highlighted text. KDE2 has a very nice app called Kicker that, with a hot key, can copy into it's "clipboard" (notice, you can have more than one thing in there too, unlike in Windows), and paste it almost anywhere else.
