Partial sound with sb16 pci

Hi, I'm running slack8.1 with a soundblaster 16-pci, I run modprobe es1371 for it, and kde makes its noises when window opens or closes etc, but other programs suchas gaim dont, and in the console I get this error
/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy

but programs like xine and xmms work ok

I have the same problem, except those programs work occasionally instead of never.
