Today I started to get the following message when I use the locate command.
Warning: database '/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old. How do I correct this?

prolly with "updatedb" as root. should be a daily cron job to do this so you might want to read up on that too.

It'll take a while.

Hello: thanks for the info. A cron job?
wrekd do you know of any contacts/clubs in the metro area for linuxwannabies? I am struggling, making headway very slowly though, some tutoring would speed things considerably. Thanks LearninLinux... :)

It could be that updatedb is scheduled to run through the Daily entry in /etc/crontab, but the time it is scheduled happens to be a time you do not have Linux up and running.

My /etc/crontab has

58 5 * * * root [ -x /usr/sbin/cronloop ] && /usr/sbin/cronloop Daily

for Daily of which runs updatedb at 5:58 every morning.

I have 50update-slocatedb in /etc/cron.d/Daily which the entry in /etc/crontab (above) executes.

Watts makes a good point. If your computer does not run overnight then the cron job will not be able to run as scheduled.

As far as user groups in the area....i don't really know. i think there is one here at school (GT) and there is also ALE - atlanta linux enthusiasts. but since i've never gotten involved with either i couldn't comment on the quality of the groups. for me, reading up and asking q's here was the fastest way to learn. if you ever need a quick answer you can im me - rel3wreck on AIM. (use gaim ;))

Hello all: Once again thanks for info, running the updatedb did the trick, After some reading it does seem that the cron runs the update when my machine is not running. Currently just exploring apache, no pages present, so I turn the laptop off during the night.
wrekd thanks for the info, I'll definatly continue using this site and also use the google linux (didn't even know that it existed) :) LearninLinux...

This BBS could also go by the name of "sysadmins anomymous". If you are new to any flavor of Unix compatible system, get your head around this idea: You are now your own sysadmin! Welcome to the club.
Welcome to the fun? of learning how to be the commander of your own destiny. MS never gave you this much control. Once you learn how to apply that control, you will not go back to MSucks ( unless your mate is sold on MS, in which case, my condolences). Been there; done that; still there; until I figure out how to get rid of her.
