Hi

Why is Mandrake SUCH crap with USB? When i try to boot my freshly installed 9.1 system i get "modprobe: modprobe insmod hid failed" after "configuring devices". Not only that, whenever I try, I have to reinstall the USB drivers for my motherboard completely in windows xp, or else i can't choose wich system to boot in LILO! Even after that has been done, when i finally get to the log-in prompt in Mandrake after a zillion years, everything is frozen. All USB support in bios is set, and Flashing bios didn't help either. I cannot believe after all this time, Mandrake still can't get USB config right. Does anybody here know a way around this if i (or without!) arrange another mouse/keyboard? I searched the forums but didn't find anything quite matching this.

stuff:
Gigabyte GA7 VAXP mobo (VIA kt400)
logitech dual optical USB mouse
compaq internet USB keyboard

It seems a little odd that USB drivers in XP would have ANYTHING AT ALL to do with lilo, since the MBR loads before XP, and XP doesn't engage usb until about 75% of the way throught the bootup process... Anyway, just make sure legacy USB support is turned on in your BIOS, and turn off plug-n-play OS in your BIOS, and you should be good to go. lilo is completely separate from the Mandrake kernel, so you should be ok.

Hi

Thanx for responding. I don't have anything called legacy usb support in my BIOS. Only four options for controller 1.1, and 2.0, usbmouse and usbkeyboard. I also tried assigning values instead of using auto under plug 'n' play. Nothing worked:( (and once again, i couldn't use my usb keyboard during restart after trying) Are there any specific IRQ's i can use that for sure doesn't conflict with anything?

I agree that MDK sux, I installed it the other night hoping that it would be more user friendly then RH when it comes to windows gaming, only to find out that it's USB support sux, printer would not print no matter what, even though it says printing, nor would my scanner scan even though it also said scanning, all with no errors too. I nuked it and went back to faithful old RH 9.0

Actually i'm having the same problem with morphix/debian. It's the default 2.4.20+21 kernel! They removed the "usbkbd" and "usbmouse" modules and let the "usbhid" handle the task instead, and it quite simply isn't adequate. The default 2.4.20+21 sucks for USB:(
