dialup weirdness on mandrake 7.2

currently i am using kppp to dial out when i want to, but for some strange reason it wont route any traffic although it is working fine, i can get connected, but i cannot browse for the life of me, however if i use
ifup ppp0 it works fine???????????

ALSO
when i logged onto the pc and switched the modem on and went out the room, the box dialled into my isp without me asking it, where would i find out in linux why this is being done? and why is it done? i do not have sendmail or any daemon logging on to check anything.

First of all check the following

Do you have the DNS properly configured??

and make sure that at

/etc/resolv.conf

you have a line like the following

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the DNS you setup with KPPP

all are checked fine, kde has been playing up so i am reinstalling it anyway

no trubs.

if this reoccurs i shall investigate further in the meantime.
