OK, I am a newbie. I have looked all over the net for the last two weeks trying to figure out why I cannot got my linux box to play audio cds or mp3 files. I am running redhat 8 with all current updates on a compaq PIII. The sound card DOES work. Plays test sounds beautifully. Gives the appearance of playing the cd. Recognizes the song titles etc. This cd player was working great as a windows box. Has two drives one of which is a burner. Same issue with trying to play MP3 files. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you set the CD volume to maximum in the audio mixer?

I have the same problem. I now have Red Hat 9 but did have 8 a few days ago. Both versions will NOT play the cd's but will play wavs, mp3s, ogg's, etc just fine. I read on Bugzilla that one user has Red Hat 9 and he has fixed this problem by connecting an ANALOG cable to the cdrom drive. Apparently linux can't play cds through the digital interface on the cdrom drive like windows can. I havn't checked to see if this is my problem yet myself but maybe it will help you?

Follow my sig for quirks to get the MP3 support for xmms. It isn't included by Redhat because of liscence concerns.

That is incorrect. I used to have a CDROM drive with a digital out and it worked fine on Linux. Of course, you must remember to enable the digital input of your soundcard in the mixer.

my digital output works fine. Although i have to equalize it with the analog output. by defualt my redhat9 assigned the digital out to "dig1" on the volume control. (if that helps) ... ;^\
