I'm looking to move beyond NT 4.0 and after seeing how much it would cost to go to Windows 2000 I am looking for alternatives. All I ask is you be objective in this (I'm guessing your all pretty big Linux fans) and tell me how well Linux can replace Windows as a domain server. It needs to be a print server and file server. Plus I would be curious if there is any good email server software (there is no way I could deal with sendmail, it needs to be easy to manage). I'm thinking Linux won't be really good for this stuff until it has a better user interface and perhaps until Samba 3.0 is released.

THanks for your help!

It is my understanding that, via a Samba implementation, Linux can provide you with PDCs/BDCs.
I haven't attempted doing this particular project myself, since I have no need to do so--maybe someday.

I'm also given to the understanding that Samba.org does have some documentation relating to PDC/BDC issues.
Print and file services are trivial, given the task as a whole--very do-able.

As to e-mail services, sendmail is a good package, IMHO, but you might want to take a look at the pertinent foundries over at sourceforge.net.

I have a Linux server with Samba running as a PDC. So far I have not found anything my Windows DC could do, my Linux DC couldn't. Keep in mind though that setting it up will take more time and effort than it would on your everyday NT or W2K machine. But overall I am quite satisfied with it.
