problem with cd rom

I am using red hat 8.0 . The problem I am facing is that i cannot copy files from any of my cdrom drives to my hdd. I tried in x windows and also tried the cp command but it gives me an error message. (I/o operation cannot be performed.)
Additionally when i play audio cds i do not get sound. I do not face the same problem in windows.
Any suggestions?

These might be different problems.

Are you mounting the CD before accessing files? This wouldn't pertain to music CDs which don't have to be mounted.

When you play an audio CD do you get output from the player that makes it seem like the CD is being read (like time elapsing, meters jumping)? If so you might check mixer settings or device permissions...

is the device set to cable select, i had some problems with that a long time ago, i dont think many manufacturers use cs anymore though
