Okay, just got Mandrake 8.1, and the new KDE is GREAT! Much faster. Just, generally speaking, better. Also, I have support for some things that didn't exist before. That's always a good thing.

HOWEVER...good things do not come without their problems. Here is what I have found so far, and I hope somebody can help me fix them up, or if they know where I can go to try. (I have already searched for answer to these problems, so, I am asking as a last resort.)

1. CD Problems - Apparently, when I place a CD into the tray (specifically the Mandrake installation CDs) and run Software Manager and use that to install a new program - Mandrake won't let me eject the CD until I begin the reboot process. Hitting the eject button on the actual CD drive does absolutely nothing. It's kind of peculiar.

2. GAIM - Yeah yeah, I know. A lot of people don't like AOL and their whole service, but, I have it. And, for me, it works. However, GAIM does not work under Mandrake 8.1. I get a message about my password not being correct. I know for sure it is, because I use the same one to log in under windows. And, my password works if I use the instant messanger program from AOL. I'm thinking it may be something with GAIM. Any suggestions? Tips?

That's what I've discovered so far. Other than that, everything is kewl.

For me supermount is not working at all. xconfig shows that indeed there's an option in there for supermount but it's not doing anything for cd/floppy/usb mass storage. So I have to mount and unmount everything manually which isn't a big deal.
To mount your cd drive "mount /mnt/cdrom", to unmount it "umount /mnt/cdrom" (note it's umount not unmout)
floppy it's "mount /mnt/floppy" and "umount /mnt/floppy"

I've found several programs that come on the mandrake 8.1 cd's that don't even work with it.

Yeah...same problem here. Hmmmmm...I'm kind of disappointed in certain things now that I am getting more into it. I do think my CD drive is mounted, because it opens to grab my CD, but, then, it just...keeps it. Doesn't release it. (And, I definitely need to get GAIM working. I hate the Linux version of AIM.)

internet dialer will not route using the modem, however using ifup ppp0 will work fine!!!!!!

this bug appeared in 7.1 or .2 not sure, but worked fine in 8.0 but rears its ugly head again

the dns info is fine in the internet dialler config as well as resolv.conf

can anyone help?

As for keeping the cd's, my LM7.0 included the "eject" command. Just enter it at a command prompt. I see no reason for them to have dropped it from later versions. Good luck!

Well...'eject' works - with my DVD drive. Not the one I am using to install the programs. I'm really confused...may be heading back to Mandrake 8. I'm not sure yet...

Dark Ninja

P.S. I REALLY need to get GAIM working. That, more than anything, is what will send me back.

I've noticed that with my CD-ROM drive too. Anymore, I just right-click the icon and select "eject." It's too bad the supermount option doesn't work correctly. You have to do the same thing with the floppy...as I found out the other night. I tried to insert another floppy and access it...it only showed me the contents of the floppy I took out.

The other problem I've noticed with LM-8.1...when I first install the distro, I have sound. When I reboot, I lose my sound. Loading the sb sound card fails at bootup. That's kind of weird.

I liked 8.0, but I love the feel of 8.1...besides the supermount probs and my sound probs. Other than that, those are the only two things (really) that I see wrong with it. :)

i fixed the internet dialler problem, disable the use of the isp dns server setting thing in linuxconf, set your hosts.conf to your isp's dns, and in the internet dialler, set dns to automatic and disable existing dns blah blah blah

worked for me

btw
in mandrake update it ejects my 2nd cdrom not my 1st

1st is a burner on /mnt/cdrom and comes from /dev/scd0
and the 2nd is a dvdrom on /mnt/cdrom2 and comes from /dev/hdd i think

but when it asks to put a cd in /mnt/cdrom it ejects the 2nd one!!!

weird

any answers to this one ?

cheers

dvd

ps its the best version ive used yet
opengl off the bat!

that's one of the good things about Mandrake and it becomes a bad thing. They really don't test the new software before they release it. KDE 2.2.1 came out like a week and a half before it was released with Mandrake 8.1 You get new software, but expect problems. The total opposite of this, is Debian. It has software that has been tested for over a year before it's released, but it's really old. The other distro's tend to come in between.

I really like 8.1. I haven't found many bugs so far for me. I am using Gnome and really like the right click/mount options. The one thing I dislike is the integration of Nautilus into the gnome desktop. I would prefer GMC since it is much faster. Installing GMC creates a conflict with Nautilus where they both try to draw the desktop. I haven't been able to fix this yet. I think 8.1 is much better than 8.0 was.

I don't know. Don't usually use it. I'm a StarOffice fan myself. (6.0 Beta is out. WOO HOO!) But...other people I have talked to say KOffice is looking very good now...whatever that means.

I had the same problem with the CDROM
but found an workaround
First of all - unmount the CD - it will let you to eject now, then go and add yourself to the cdrom group, then chmod properly the mnt directory. Scince i did it - it works.

GAIM works fine for me too, exept my buddy list was blank until I manually typed them all back in there.

I tried saving my buddy list from the windows version and loading it into gaim..but that didn't work (as I figured it wouldn't but I thought Id try)

Yeah, I managed to get GAIM working. I just couldn't connect using the Oscar server - I had to use the other one. (Got an invalid password if I tried to go through Oscar.)

I wanted a change so I removed Debian Sid (2.4.5 kernel) and installed LM8.1

I would give the distro the thumbs down from my experience!!

1) Had to hand set the hard drive opt. even though installed in expert.

2) In KDE, programs take way longer to load than in debian, even though using ReiserRF (LM8.1)compared the ext2(Debian) before. After heavy use in KDE over time, KDE programs can take up to 30 sec to load. Gnome or X based programs still load instantly (tested with GIMP).

Changed to 2.4.10 kernel as I thought the VM in the standard kernel was the problem, a bit better but still slow.

3) Why does KDevelop (as an example) depend on GIMP and other graphic programs. BLOAT BLOAT BLOAT!!!!

Out the door way to quick here. It is a shame as I used to like LM.

Will have to try another distro.

If you have any suggestions to change my mind I would be happy to hear them.

if ya asked me, I'd say LM should have included 2.4.10 for the speed changes b/c they do have a lot of bloat. But it's nice for newer users cause it automates everything. Although, I didn't notice much in the area of slowdown when I had 8.0 on my system.

you guys should send these complaints to ML themselves. These problems wont get fixed if we just sit here and talk about them all day.
