1: Are all serial external modems hardware modems and so are guaranteed to work with linux?

2: Does the latest Enlightenment require Gnome or will it work on its own?

Thanks

Yes, external modems are hardware modems. That's why they cost more. However, if you want a good internal modem, I recommend the 3com 2977 PCI modem. Works flawlessly.

As far as enlightenment goes, it will work on it's own or with gnome. Gnome is not required.
