I don't know if this is type of site that will herald my use of some hookups to build a blazingly fast computer for nearly no cost, but I'll find that out soon I'm sure.

In any case, I've been told that I should go with a dual boot option, with either Windows ME or 98 SE for games, and some type of Linux OS.

So my question is, which version of Windows should I go with, and what Linux program (or kernal, version, whatever, I'm learning this stuff) should I use? My goal is to be able to play games, run some college apps and general MS Office stuff, and keep my computer humming along without all the errors I'm getting from the 2 year old Wintel (right word?) Gateway I'm using right now.

I'll give the system specs I'm going for if anyone needs them.

PS Anyone here from Apolyton Civ site, just out of curiosity?

Check the distro-choice NHF here. Also, Linux can do games and M$ Office style apps too, provided you have the hardware. A voodoo3 or TNT2/GeForce card for games, and StarOffice for the Office crap.

Looking in the NHF seems like the logical thing to do, so I'll go back to that for a bit. :D But I was looking more for an average personal preference, and a little bit more help on the WinME vs. Win98 issue than I thought any other place could provide.

What are the limitations of emulators, btw? What risks do I run when I'm using those to do normal Windows things?

Well, neither WinME or Win98 will take advantage of your second CPU so that's worthless. You'll have to run NT or 2000 for SMP support in a windows enviroment. Some form of Slackware or Debian.

I prefer  Debbie Ann

Heh, one 1.2GHz AMD Athlon is good enough for me, thank you. =)
