Hi all,

I just downloaded the Mandrake 8.1 beta 3 ISO's. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to burn CD's in Linux. I'm running Mandrake 8.0 and thought that it automatically setup my burner. When I look in /etc/fstab, it seems to be configured just like the reader. Could this be causing some problems? Also, the CD burning software that I'm trying to use is GCombust and gtoaster (I can't figure out how to use either one of them).

Thanks for any help you can give. I think that when I can figure out how to burn CD's under Linux, I'll be completely Windows free.

Thanks

Have you enabled SCSI emulation and all that good stuff? If you don't know what I am talking about, search the forum. There have been numerous discussions about this. If you don't find anything or still need help come back and we will repeat the steps here.

Good luck!

Well, first off Gcombust and gtoaster are GFE's (Graphical Front Ends) for several DIFFERENT types of apps that burn, read, and copy CD's. Depending upon which type of burner you have, the basic program for this (or, well-known, that is) is cdrecord. Cdrecord is limited, though, on what drives it supports. As of the current release, cdrecord doesn't support ANY kind of USB burner (at least, according to the developer of cdrecord, it hasn't been implemented), so if it's a USB burner chances are it doesn't work, period, above being a reader.
Gcombust and gtoaster USUALLY have to be told where to look for programs it needs to burn, title, and read different types of CD's (usually in /usr/bin). There's a fair amount of setup involved, including knowing WHERE linux has placed your drive (if SCSI emulation is enabled, as the above said,so be forewarned. Usually the device ID will be 0,0,0 (the default), but sometimes (again, depending upon the type of drive/where it is chained if an IDE device) this can be different. Go here for info on cdrecord:
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/cdrecord .html (http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/cdrecord.html)

There are several links, to tell you how to get info on your drive(s), where they are, and what to do to get them working, if supported. He also has a list of currently-supported drives, some of which only have read functions (such as the USB devices). Most all your questions can be answered there.
Hope this helps!

Hi,

Don't know if this will be any help, but Mandrake auto detected my CDR & CDROM. I use Gtoaster and have successfully burned cd's.

What I had to do was go into the preferences tab in gtoaster, click on the CD recorder tab and see if there is a listing for any drives.

If there isn't you need to add your drives manually.

My Memorex twelve Maxx 1032 CDR was mounted as /dev/hdc on the IDE and /dev/scd0 on the SCSI emulation /mnt/cdrom2 on the desktop. My Memorex Maxx52 CDROM was mounted as /dev/hda on IDE and /mnt/cdrom on the desktop, so, in the preferences, I added both drives entering the relevent device settings in the appropriate boxes ( the SCSI value was 0,0 ), saved the results and both work fine.

I would just add that neither are listed as supported devices on the cdrecord website. But they work.

If you need to find out the mount points etc on your drives, look in hte mandrake control panel under hardware and all the info is in there, just jot it down and then fill in hte gaps.

I had problems with my first burner which was a TEAC 8x drive, but the memorex 12x burn proof works without a glitch.

Good luck, hope this helps.
