root and normal user GCC mismatch

I recently upgraded my Debian system from GCC 2.95.2 to GCC 3.2.2. GCC 3.2.2 is compiled correctly and working with a slight glitch. When I log in as a normal user and type 'gcc -dumpversion' it returns 3.2.2. However if I SU in as root or log in as root and type 'gcc -dumpversion' it returns the old version 2.95.2.
I am completely baffled by this problem and any help would be appreciated.

Check the $PATH of the normal user and root. Thats most likely the problem.
