If you install something wiht apt, then upgrade it without apt, then try upgrading with apt, will apt detect the non-apt version, or just think you have installed the original version of the software?

Bradmont 02-20-2001, 11:40 PM If you install something wiht apt, then upgrade it without apt, then try upgrading with apt, will apt detect the non-apt version, or just think you have installed the original version of the software? bdl 02-21-2001, 12:35 AM The real question is: if you could use apt-get to install something, why would'nt you? But seriously, I'm quite certain apt keeps the *originally* installed version info and would have no idea if you did some custom install over it. Ideally, you'd use apt to remove the package first, then it wouldnt matter what you did, apt would be left out of the loop. Gaccm 02-21-2001, 12:36 AM i'm, pretty sure that apt would only know what it does, and i also think that apt and make install installs it into two differet places. Strike 02-21-2001, 01:00 AM How did you install it? If you installed it with dpkg it will, because apt really just works on top of dpkg. If you didn't, it won't. I wish alien would create Debian source packages. If it did, installing everything via apt would be SOOO easy. Bradmont 02-21-2001, 06:54 AM Thanks, everybody. What I did was upgrade X from the prepackaged version to 4.02, from binary tarballs. I figured that apt wouldn't be able to tell, but who knows, it conceivibly could check the current installed versions of stuff before updating :). justlinux.com
