Mesa on Mandrake 9

I had Mandrake 9 working fine then I linstalled mesa from the mandrake disks and lost input from the keyboard. the mouse still works but I can't get logged in to the terminal, or root, or anything.
How do I change the runlevel if I can't type anything in?

You could boot up with the installation cd, choose rescue mode, and maybe log into your system that way. You'd be at runlevel 1. You might be able to uninstall Mesa from that command line if the package (un)installer will work.
