location for extracting files

hi. I'm fairly new. I just wanna know, where is the best place to extract the downloaded files? Is it the home directory of the user, if not where? After compiling and installing programs, where are the files usually installed because i just insatlled the latest version of xmms and i cant find it. thx.

if you are compiling source code, the "proper" place is /usr/src but it doesn't really matter. the home directory is fine.

the binary for xmms will be in /usr/bin
