So lately I've noticed that my monitor will flicker occasionally. Seems like its not the whole screen, but it's pretty fast so I can't tell for sure. It just seems like the sides sort of pull in or the screen has a "wave" go through it. Like I said it's pretty fast so its hard to describe but it seems to come from the sides. The reasons I am concerned are:
1) I have a fairly new Ti 4200 (about a month old) and really don't want it to be the video card.
2) I can't really afford a new monitor.
At first I figured it was me because I would only ever seem to catch it out of the corner of my eye. But just now it was pretty darn visible. Worth noting that It doesn't happen very often, I don't have my videocard oc'd and the monitor is about 4 years old. A cheap KDS. If anyone has any thoughts or experience let me know. Thanks.

mine started doing that about a month ago, i'd give you about 2 months maximum before the monitor completely dies, sorry, he's going to monitor heaven.

Damn. Thanks. Can anyone second this opinion? I don't know if I emphasized this enough but I've been watching this monitor for about ten hours today and it only did the thing once this morning. VERY intermitent. Dead? Jeez...just what I need.

i dont know whats up with your monitor, you could always call a computer or maybe tv repair shop to see what they say.

by the way, if you think your monitor could be dying, the best way to prolong it's life is not stare at it for 10 hours at a time. but, its probably not like you really have a choice

good luck with that

If you have access to a line voltage with strip chart recording, or data journaling, plug it into the same outlet as the computer/monitor pair and monitor the voltage through several of these flicker episodes.

You might actually have a brief sag on that line.
There's no sense in replacing a monitor if it's a branch circuit problem, or a flakey UPS.

I am having the same trouble, mine started after I upgraded to redhat 9.0, i have no flicker in windows or up to the rh loggin screen but after that it is constant with mouse movement or refresh. I've checked my computer for leakage but find none?

Are you using the correct refresh rate for the monitor? Check the settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config or -4.

Just so you know, monitors can occasionally flicker when mobile phones ring or something similar. Check you haven't got any devices that emit signals in the range of your monitor.

thanks, I have checked, the problem is similiar to radio interference, but the problem only occurs in redhat 9.0 as I stated it doesn't occur in windows or rh 8.0 but it occurs in rh 9.0 after the login screens, I am at wits end trying to figure this one.

If you still have your /etc/X11/XF86Config (or -4) from Redhat 8.0, then compare the settings for the video card and monitor.
