ok. here is the situation: I've been trying in the evening for about a week to get X installed. I've got a base of debian installed and I am now looking to use X.
But this is my problem:
I want to use the debian package system to install X. I figure that if I don't then what the hell is the point of banging my head against the wall to learn how to use debian if the biggest application on my machine won't be able to be upgraded using apt-get.
And this is my second problem:
-I've tried using "apt-get install task-x-window-system" - failed
-I've tried using dselect and installing task-x-window-system(following all dependencies, etc.) - failed
-I've tried using dselect and installing xf86setup (following all dependencies, etc.) - failed
-I've tried selecting the simple package install during the setup and selecting all of the X-related packages - failed
From what limited knowledge I have it seems as though my ATI Rage 128 AGP card is messing it up somewhere.
Two of the failures above brought me to a graphical setup screen for X, but one froze during the program(there wasn't any mouse support), and one froze after I finished(just a blank screen)
I challenge someone to explain to me a simple way to get a basic X configuration using the apt-get system. I don't care if it starts out at 640x480 resolution with 8 colors. Just get me to a place that I can work from!
thanks in advance
