Hi:

I am relatively new to Linux. I downloaded the Star Office bin file, changed the permissions to execute, but I do not know how to proceed further. The Sun site says it CONTAINS all I need to install Star Office, but how do I open it?

Thanks,

At the prompt, type:

./filename.bin

Good luck. ;)

Hi:

Thanks, but I did that
( ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin)
javascript: x()and absolutely nothing happened.

It went back to the prompt, and the file was still not openable, even in a window.

The file is so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin, and a mouseover reveals it is an "Unknown" file type.

I have installed Star Office in Windows before, but I know Linux is not Windows by any stretch (I think it is much better).

Is there something else to this sirt of file?

THanks,

Open up the console program and type it.
What does the error message if any say?

What distro you using?

Well, I am using RH 7.1, in which I have installed RPMs and had few problems.

Like I say, in the console I typed it. No error message, nothing returned but the same prompt.

I use RH7.1 and in Gnome I just double click on the file and it ran setup just fine. You may want to redownload the file. It should be a 93Meg file, make sure that it is all there.

Just a side note, after double clicking the file it takes about 20 seconds to start the setup program ( on a 550MHz machine), if you get impatient and continue to double click you will start multiple instances of the program and slow things down even more

OK Thanks. I am redownloading now, the file size is currently 0 bytes. I never evne checked that, thanks. It took close to an hour to download on DLS, with a progress bar, and for what? It said it was done also, wierd.

Anyways, redownloading. I will check file size this time post download.

Thanks,

Quick FYI,

I always end up having to chmod this file because the execute bit is off.

chmod 777 filename.bin

Now that command was on the Star Office site and I did that one the chmod 777filename.bin.

Which was all of the instructions they basically had. And why I was baffled. It is half way done downloading, I should know something soon.

I am also doing this as root.

Thanks again,

Ok. Fully downloaded, 87.9 MB file. chmod 777 went fine, typine ./filename gives the following error:

[root@localhost Downloads]# ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
glibc version: 2.2.2

file not found '/home/rzuvich/Downloads/so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-000.bin'
file not found '/home/rzuvich/Downloads/so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-001.bin'

error: One or more files are missing! Please ensure that all necessary files are present.

What am I missing now?
