Anyone know how to use chat daemon?

How can I chat, that is, effectively communcate in real-time with another user on an different network through an ordinary terminal like xTerm? Thank You.

What if I want to talk outside of the local network. Is this possible?

Don't know for sure, but if you use the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN), it might work. The IP address might work as well.
