(Phew... I can't even figure out if this is the right place to post this - how am I gonna get this kernel upgrade sorted out!)

Anyway... I'm sitting here with 3 or 4 different descriptions of kernel upgrading. Last week I installed Mandrake 7.1 and then upgraded to kernel 2.4.1; later I wiped the drive and installed Mandrake 7.2 and upgraded to 2.2.18. (Uh, I'm trying to get USB support, specifically USB ethernet, btw.)

Anyway, both times everything went ok (apparently) except when I rebooted, the line items on reboot were way different than what was going by previously with just the Mandrake install - and lots of these were fails. No real big deal, stuff still ran. I tracked down this 'make oldconfig' business, and make xconfig has an option for loading an old config file. The problem is I couldn't find a '.config' file in Mandrake's '/usr/src/linux-whatever' folder. Anybody know where I can find it?

My second problem relates back up to those kernel update procedures I pulled down from various places. Apparently, I want to make the USB ethernet option in the kernel as a module, and at somepoint I have to do 'modprobe' or something like that. I haven't been able to dig up any info (in plain English) on syntax or when or how to do this.

Anybody help with the modprobe explanation?

My thanks!
