I use RH7 with X 4.0.1a Sometimes, X loses control of the mouse completely, the cursor just goes and stays in the lower left corner and keeps popping all the windows like crazy.
At that point I have no option but to destroy the session and restart X.
Did anyone face this problem before? What's wrong and what is the solution?

TIA

I've had this problem, too. Are you using a PS/2 mouse? Then look at the "Pointer" section in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and look what mouse protocol there is. If it's "PS/2", change it to "IMPS/2" or vice versa.

If you don't have a PS/2 mouse, or if this doesn't help, try taking off the console mouse support (gpm). Shutting gpm fixed it for me.

Thanks NGene, my protocol is IMPS2 and I dont want to remove it cos I was able to get it scrolling after a long struggle..so I think I will ahve to put up with it (it happens very infrequently..but when it does its a royal pain in the butt). I think I will try turning off gpm.

The FAST FIX for crazy mouse in KDE is to hit:

CTRL+ALT+F2 (like the reboot in DOS, except hitting F2 and not DEL after you hold the others down.)

which takes you out of KDE to the log-on screen for a terminal.

Then, as fast as you can, unless you wish to use a terminal, hit:

CTRL+ALT+F7

and it jumps right back into KDE with all windows, work, and screens totally intact.

And, for maximum speed, simply hold down CTRL and ALT, then hit F2, let up F2, then hit F7, let up F7, then let up on CTRL and ALT. No need to let up on the first two keys while doing the sequence.

I am not going to guarantee this will fix the mouse problem for a while. I will say, for me it always fixes the mouse problem for a while. Sometimes, it doesn't fail again while I am using it.

Clearly, if you can get a solid fix, that's better. Still, this cycling out and back into KDE almost instantly sure beats Win98, where a crazy mouse makes it hard to shut down all your work before you exit so you can reboot to get control of the mouse again.

And, if you reboot with open work in Win98, the work is toast. Recently, I had open emails from someone asking me questions about Mexico, and I managed to lose their addresses and all when the keyboard locked up. Grrr!!

Hey all - I had a similar problem when I upgraded to 4.0.2... it was in fact my mouse protocol. BUT, my mouse was failing right from the start. Jumping around like a hampster on speed.

I changed the protocol from "PS/2" to "IMPS/2", and it functioned perfectly.

Correct me if I am wrong...
PS/2 = Standard PS/2 mouse.
IMPS/2 = "IntelliMouse PS/2" protocol???

(FYI - My mouse is a MS Intellimouse)
Good luck on the problem!
