Hi new to linux so feel free to call me "newbie" :)

Have a aureal vortex 8820 sound card and downloaded ther drives but i get a strange error messsage.

"Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device."

And I check and found that there was a /dev/dsp but I dont really understan it.

Got another error "the module you are trying to load is compiled with a gcc version 2 compiler, but your kernel is compiled with a version 3 gcc compiler, this is now not to work."

Can someone help me with this please?

p.s I got it to work when I used slackware 8.0

I have no experience with Slack, but it sounds (no pun intended) like you need to download/use drivers compiled for gcc3 - or get the source code and compile the module yourself.

Cheers :)

I havent found any with gcc 3 compailer and source code....well I dont know how to compile it myself, and I havent found any source codec for it.
