Alrighty folks,

I want to try Linux out on my main PC. I'm currently running Windows XP on hda, and I just set up a my second harddrive, hdb to accomadate Mandrake Linux. hdb is empty, just formatted it.

What are the steps to follow to dual boot? Should I set up my linux partitions on hdb, then setup lilo? Any help is greatly aprreciated.

Thanks,

JRT

I never installed Linux on a new hd b4. But I thin it would be the same.
Install Linux on hdb. Install LILO on .. say hdb1. And go www.linuxdoc.org (http://www.linuxdoc.org) to see a how to on dual booting Linux/NT...

This has the look of becoming an interesting thread.

I have always used the NT Loader HOW-TO and the LILO optional. I prefer the NT Loader one because I know my Win partition won't be touched.

On my laptop I am running Win2K and RedHat 7.1.
On my desktop I am running Win2K Pro, Win XP RC 2, and RH 7.1

The LILO option is a god send when you are updating your kernel but the NT Loader option is safer for your Windows partition.

BTW, you cannot see your boot.ini because it is hidden. Check Folder Options to unhide system files.

Good Luck!

I'm dual booting win2k and red hat 7.1 with lilo in the mbr - no problems, what's wrong with lilo in the mbr?

I haven't any problems with NT/Win98/Linux using Lilo... Maybe I'm special :)

my question is why would you tourtre your self with XP...?

if you do anything.. let lilo take care of it..

on the contrary... on some computers... no matter how new, sometimes lilo just won't work...

i think with mine it's the bios...

I've seen this a few times in the last few days: MBR... what the *&^$&^$# is it?

mbr is the master boot record, it is not really part of any of the partitions of the hard drive

I've had Mandy, ME, and XP all on my rig at one time and never had any issues with LILO.
