I'm trying to setup redhat 7.1 on an 8GB primary slave. I have Windows2000 server on the 30GB master. I tried a workstation install of redhat after using fdisk to repartition the hdb drive. The install seemed to work but now I have no idea how to boot the Linux OS. I also tried to do a custom install to use LILO but I've read that it is not cool to install LILO in the MBR of 2000 and the other option was the first record of hdb. Can anybody tell me-- How do I boot linux?
thanks

I also meant to ask: Does anybody have suggested partitions for my linux HD? Asside from / and /boot and <swap>, should I be partitioning for /usr /home, etc...?
Thanks again

When I installed Linux as a dual boot I kept the boot loader (lilo) on the second hard drive. The other option would be to go into 2000 and modify the boot.ini file.
For genreal use the swap and root partitions are fine but if you're wanting to do more I'd say put in the bin, var, local, home, and usr directories in their own partitions.
Hope that helps.

For a while, my comp hated Lilo, so anytime i tried writing to MBR, i would get the 101010 thing. The down and dirtiest way of doing it would be to create a bootdisk, then just pop in the bootdisk anytime you want to boot linux.
Also, i installed RH7.1 on my friend's W2k machine, and it seemed to work fine.
Back stuff up, then play around...

If I keep LILO on the second drive, how will it be recognized if the BIOS is looking at the primary master? Should I be changing my boot sequence from the C drive to something else? When I originally added the slave, it had 98 on it and Windows recognized it as another drive. Since I repartitioned it for native linux, I can no longer see it (although the boot process shows it to be there). Any ideas?

Check this out (http://support.caldera.com/caldera/solution?11=000127-0032&130=0949003334&14=&2715=&15=&2716=&57=search&58=&2900=Qva4T085VM&25=6&3=lilo%202000) from the Caldera Knowledgebase as it covers booting Linux and W2K using either Lilo or the W2K/NT bootloader.
Hope it helps.

this is the easiest way
when you set up lilo, i would put it if i were you on the mbr of the primary drive, where windows resides, as 2k doesnt write to the mbr like nt does.
then when you are satisfied that you can boot into linux and into the windows 2000 menu and onto 2000, then right click on the my computer icon > properties > hardware (i think) then select the startup and recovery button
here you can select the amount of time the 2k menu appears, deselect this and it will boot straight into windows from lilo.
