BTW, I was just at Barnes & Noble this afternoon. The current(last?) issue of Maximum Linux was on sale for $7.99 (w/CD). A bit steep if you as me. IMHO, Linux Journal ($5) is a much better technical magazine.

Ah, but not everyone likes really technical magazines...remember Maximum Linux is for everyone (newbies to gurus).

Unfortunately, a petition isn't gonna do it. Magazines make their dough through selling ads, so the advertisers were probably pulling out for lack of circulation or hits from their ads.
