Hey, ok I'm trying to partition my drive so I can run XP and linux out of my box. So anyways I got this ntfsresize tool from http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/ and I know how to get it to work, but I just can't the shell to read my floppy directory when i put the tool in to resize. Has anyone used this tool, and can anyone help me out?

I have no idea about the tool you are trying, but if you haven't picked a distro yet, I'd reccommend downloading Mandrake 9.1 and use the partition tool on that.

Mandrake includes NTFS Resizing and viewing, where as other distros (ala RedHat) don't in fear of violating Microsofts rights to the filesystem. (Which I don't believe exist)

EDIT: I'm not sure which version of Mandrake includes resizing, but I'm pretty sure only 9.1 does. Previous versions would require you to resize with another prog. I used my friend's partition magic to do this, but unless you know someone with it, you'll have to shell out some dough.

I got a new laptop. I like NTFS if you gotta' use MS because it handles brute force shutdowns.

I had some glitches with 9.1, and it did wipe the Win stuff. Because of the way it acted (kept whining about not being able to format the hda1 partition, but after I reinstalled Win, it loaded in fine with the box to select which partitions to format) I sort of suspect there was a glitch in the install load, and it may be others found it would partition NTFS with no data loss.

I didn't really mind having to reinstall XP, because my machine was new so everything was on the recovery CD's. And, being retired, I liked not having to shell out the $50 or $70 to buy Partition Magic 8 or Partition Commander 8. The time it took me to reinstall was well paid for that $70 saved.

Well I know that Mandrake 9.1 does indeed support NTFS resizing, because they include the ntfs sourceforge in their kernel and what not. But the thing is I've got RedHat 8, and I dont like the idea of paying money for Partition Magic, when this tool is free and I've heard it works really good. Specifically right now my problem is creating a DOS disk with the tool on it. I thought I did it right the first time, but I guess I didn't. Does anyone know how I would make this DOS disk. Im using the Redhat install disk to boot from, then going to the shell prompt and trying to use the floppy directory.

You don't have to finish the install to use the NTFS resizing on the cdrom1 which comes with Mandrake 9.0 and ASPLinux 7.3

I did need to proceed to the part where the actual file installation is started but, then I quit and presto! the NTFS partition is resized.

You do get a required warning about maybe corrupting the NTFS system files. So if you have really important data I would recommend using an image program like Norton Ghost 2003. That way you have an added benifit of a backup program. :) When you restore from the backup image you can change the size of the partition as part of the proccess.
