hi everyone.

i'm having issues where i can see the files on my win2k box from the linux box but i can't see the linux box from the win2k box.

from the win2k box the username and password box doesn't even come up. i just get a not accessible, network now found.

where should i start looking and what files should i post here to troubleshoot this?

workgroup = WORKGROUP <-- I assume this is the name of your windows workgroup?

hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127. 10. <---You chopped these up to protect your DHCP given IP's???? Cuz if you didn't, they don't look right.

i didn't chop those up. i just followed the examples..

what was given was

192.168.1 192.168.2 127.

i just added the 10.

i'm not running on dhcp. i must give the box it's ip address. the one for this is 10.0.0.18.

i'll add them in correctly and see what happens.

btw, i can get a password prompt if i use samba through the linux box. i just don't get one with windows.

i think it's a firewall issue since i can go into windows but not windows to linux. i'll look into it some more and hopefully get lucky.

one more note.. i can get ssh to work if that means anything.. :(

it's working!

the weird thing is i had disabled the firewall settings to none and it didn't work before.

i disabled the firewall settings, tried it again today and it worked.

it must be one of those things...

i'll be posting on how to manually configure the firewall settings to allow samba.. thanks all!

It was probably iptables. Redhat 9 by default sets up iptables with a mini firewall. You have to configure it to your liking, but can be a source of linux/samba/windoze woes.
