Lol how funny is that. A program where 90% of it's use is for playing mp3s (maybe more than 90%), and now it comes standard WITHOUT mp3 support.

red hat feared liscensing issues or some-such. they have no ntfs support or mp3 support in anything that they distribute.

mpg123 is a little utility for converting mp3s to wavs, or just playing mp3s. the plugin just adds mp3 support to xmms.

sharth is right. You have to install xmms-mp3 (http://speakeasy.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/freshrpms/ayo/redhat/9/i386/RPMS.freshrpms/xmms-mp3-1.2.7-21.p.fr1.i386.html).

I have ogg files myself, so I don't need the MP3 plugin... :D I definately suggest them to anybody that would consider switching.

thanks for the link serz. as for OGG, what's so much better about it than mp3? higher quality like with bitrate, or better compression?

Well, Ogg Vorbis is an Open Source format with no copyright issues unlike MP3. The Ogg Vorbis site claims that it sounds better than MP3, check out their FAQ (http://www.vorbis.com/faq.psp).

wow! listen to the ogg file and the mp3PRO file. incredible difference. the thing is though i don't know if i want to make my entire collection OGG, i have about 2000 files. that's a lot of mp3 converting.

If you take the time to convert them, you really won't gain any quality as far as I know... Wouldn't you have to re-encode them from the CDs to get the higher quality at the same bitrate?

BTW, I have over 8000 ogg files that all used to be mp3. (ALL LEGAL, so I don't want to hear any crap, my CD collection is Large) I went ahead and converted them. Only took a couple of days or so if I remember right.

If you convert from mp3 to ogg, the files will sounds worse, because you're converting from one lossy algorithm to another, and lots of parts of the sound will get chopped off. For better quality, you need to encode the oggs straight from the CD or from .wav files.

i see. so in other words, ogg is a compressed wav file (in a sence) well in that case i won't bother, i'll just stick with what i have.

Just go here: http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/ and download the RPM at the top of the page that says "For RedHat 8 and 9 users to play mp3s all you need is this"... Then install the rpm and you should be able to play Unregisteredmp3s in XMMS. (Although you might want to disable the "Placeholder" plugin.)

Just remember, most portable mp3 players don't support ogg files so if you want your music on the go, you'll need mp3s.

I heard a while back that some mp3 players were going to start supporting OGG files. I believe I even posted about it a while ago.

Yeah, I heard the same. Sadly, they are the exception and not the rule.
