I'm thinking of setting up a mail server and a router, I heard debian was good for servers, is this correct, and how about for routers, or should I use a dedicated router distro??

My proper question is, on average how bigger hard disk will I need in each of those boxes. I realised it is hard to say with the in-depth specific description I have given, ;) but how much space do yours use, for example.

Thanks for any help.

that's what i use for my server OS. you can set up a nightly cron job to automatically keep your system up-to-date with apt so you will rarely have to touch it.

the amount of mail space you need totally depends on the users. how much HD space do you have available? how many users?

are they going to be downloading mail from your server with POP3? this would mean that you can get away with relatively small amount of space. this means that they only have access to their mail when they are on their workstation.

are they going to be leaving their mail on your server and accessing it via IMAP? this would mena you need more space. this also means that you could set up webmail for them so that they can access their mail remotely via a web interface.

regarding firewall with debian - i have no idea although i personally don't think it is a good idea to have data on the same box that you are using for a firewall. typically a firewall machine does only one thing - firewall.

I can get big hard drives if I need, but I can get 4.3GB super cheap, and was wondering if this would suffice, there will be probably six users to start, but it may well grow, but by that point I can expand as needed. Preferabley IMAP would be used, but POP3 if I have to. Infact while i'm at it, this is what i'm thinking of:
(as I can get it for £25 from ebay :) )

Intel Pentium 200MMX CPU
32MB RAM -I assume i'll need more than this.
4.3GB Hard Drive

Would you mind looking at it, and telling me if it is very unsuitable.

Thanks

my server is:

P Pro 200 MHx
196 MB RAM

I have the OS on a separate physical hard drive than all the data.

I just checked and the entire OS takes up only 780 MB - not including swap.

That box from ebay should be just fine.

I used to do Exchange Server sys admin / coding and most of my servers had storage limits of on average 20 -25 MB per user if i recall. Obviously VPs, etc got more but 20-25 MB is reasonable per user imho. you will have lots of space on that box with a 4.3 GB drive.

I have 2 other hard drives on my server. one i don;t use and the other is 38 GB. i keep all my ftp files on it as well as MP3s, user home drives for 2 people, and mail for 2 peopel and have about half free space on it at the moment.

Thankyou, :) that box it is then. If only I didn't have to wait until the summer, when I finish my exams before I can set it up...
