When I was using windows I used a program called Hoverdesk for my destop manager/shell replacement type thing; It meant I did not have to use a standard style boring desktop with standard icons..etc and I could have more of a sort of interface thing than a desktop (for an example of what I am trying (and probably failing abismally) to describe ave a look at http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/25768).
Could someone please tell me if there is nything like this for linux (Mandrake 9.0 if it makes any difference) as all the stuff I have seen 4 Gnome and KDE looks a bit like a standard old desktop.
THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you probably want to start looking into using a minimal window manager and add your own apps for menuing, etc instead of running a full desktop environment a.k.a. gnome/kde.

for a WM take a look at:

- fluxbox
- openbox
- blackbox
- window maker
- enlightenment

for dektop managers take a look at:

- rox-filer
- idesk

there are tons of other apps available.

if you go with the minimal window manager, and add your own choice of complimentary menuing, docking apps, then you end up with a much more personalized desktop than by using kde or gnome.
