I am currently trying to find a good media player that is very versatile. It would be nice if it would play most types of media files--mpg, avi, Quicktime, etc.

I have tried mtv, and it seems to work good with a little bit of skipping or something. Unfortunately, it only plays mpegs. Also, it gives an error with trying to convert to fullscreen (It reccomends "suid root"?).

I have also tried Xanim and it seems horrible. I haven't really read into installing new codecs but the quality is nasty so far. Is there something linux does different with video because all is fine with Windows media player (so it isn't the h/w)? Can anyone reccomend a free player or even give a little info on the ones I currently have running? Thanks.

You're out a luck for Quicktime, I think. Search the boards for a thread titled "The state a linux video" or something like that. It's only a month or two old, but I've lost it already.

Someone recently posted a "State of video playback in linux" in the OT/Rants section... you may want to check that out.

Personally, I am happy with gtv and aviplay (avifile). You also may want to go to freshmeat.net and check out MPlayer.

For mpegs you can also use gtv or xmovie among others. For avi/asf there is a plugin for xmms http://www.xmms.org/plugins_input.html#122
Realplayer works very nicely for their format.
Not sure if there is a working quicktime player yet but a search on freshmeat comes up with a bunch of results.
