Hi there all

My prof just showed me this really super-cool thing called NIS (well, I think it is cool). We have a bunch of Sun's, one of which is the NIS server, and, the other 3 of which are clients, and 1 linux machine (probably going to be 4 as soon as we kill windows on them) running on the NIS as well.

My question is, how do you set up a NIS server on a Linux machine, because, I run Linux (college student == no money == no money to buy suns), as for the NIS client config part, I think that much I can handle, but, any help would be apreciated.

thanks

Hey,
I've set this up at home. I'll try to put something together and post it here this weekend. Kinda busy tho, we just had a new kid, and building a new house. So much for my playtime...

;->

Talk to ya...

Oh, I forgot to mention its very easy. I'm also running NFS with static mounts (instead of automounts) so my unix accounts at home all have a common physical location.

Once the new house is built, I get to build a new RAID server. Whoo-Hoo!

Here is a couple of links on how to do NIS clients and servers http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/NIS-HOWTO/index.html

Server http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/NIS-HOWTO/ypserv.html

Note you don't have to reboot, just restart your yp daemons.

try it. If you have any questions, post, and I'll try to help you out.
