hi, i've tried linux mandrake 8.0 on an old computer and it didnt run very well on that computer so i have decided to try it on my main computer. i am running a windows XP beta 2505 OS. i want to dual boot linux and still keep my windows, for now :). here are my specs
i have a 1ghz with 2 HD's i need both those HD's for windows and im going to add another HD for linux. is there a way i can install linux on that new drive and have linux leave my other drives alone? P.s. i need my windows to be untouched by linux.

is there a way?!?! please help im a stupid newbie :) or wannabe

I'm running a setup similer to yours in that I have windows on one drive and mandrake 8.0 on a second drive. All you have to do when you're installing it is to install it on your 3rd drive. Then tell it you want to set it up as a multi boot (I forget where it is but it asks you that when you install it). When you start up it will load the bootloader (lilo by default) which allows you to choose which OS you want.

install to new disk and don't attempt to use LILO boot manager other than to a diskette; then you might setup loadlin in Windows to get to Linux

see u can have lilo installed on MBR to get the dual boot option or not on the MBR for which u will have use a boot disk or will have to boot from the dos prompt(loadlin.exe).
linux native i.e the partition on which u will give the mount point will be the disk inwhich linux will be installed and will boot fromthere i.e will take u there on boot.

Reminds me of my first attempt to set up a dual boot for Linux on a dual (physical) HD system. For somereason, I wasn't paying attention with exactly what it was doing when it started playing with the MBR (Master Boot Record). There are few things more horrifying that realizing that you just toasted a year old Windows install, documents and all.

Oh well, c'est la vie.

For all other newbies reading this, please, please take note when the install mentions anything like this.

I jus wanna add this...

If you like, you kin do what I did... once Lin is installed WITH lilo, load Linux and in XWindows(Control Panel under BOOT), you can change which OS gets loaded by default(So it goes to WINDOWS unless you stop the small timer and purposely choose Lin) :)

Hope that helps some!
