How can I burn .mp3 files with xcdroast-0.98? And if its not possible, anyone know of software I can use to burn mp3's? I'm running Red Hat 8.

first go to www.xcdroast.org and make sure you have the latest release. IIRC red hat 8.0 does not ship with the most current version.

to burn a cd you first have to create an iso image.

go to create cd from the main screen
then go to Master Tracks.
you'll see a file tree on the far right. select the mp3's you want to burn and select add (make sure you uncheck the box that says "display directories only"
then click through the tabs and set your iso options (probably fine by default)
you can probably skip the boot options and iso header tabs. then go to create session image. on the right you may want to check "multi-session" cd if you are using a CDRW. then click the master to image file
then on the left click write tracks.
hit the layout tracks tab.
you should see the image you created on the right. select it and hit add.
then click "accept track layout"
go back to the write tracks tab.
and hit write tracks.
that should do it for you. if you have any questions about the cd writing process there are links to the how-to's on the xcdroast web page.
go there for more info.
hope that helps.

Do you want to copy a CD that has mp3 already on it, or encode an audio CD to mp3?

If you want to encode to mp3, try grip

http://www.nostatic.org/grip

It will encode to mp3 and ogg. In the spirit of open-source and the fact that it is an awsome standard, I use ogg.

Well I was also looking for an mp3 ripper thanks. Grip seems to be good. Only one slight problem, I have it installed and running but it can't detect that there is a cd in my cdrom drive, and I think it is becuase as soon as I insert my cd (audio that is) Gnome CD player pops up. I stop it and I close it. Then I tell grip to scan and it says: No Disk. So anyone know how to fix this?

I have check the configurations and

/dev/cdrom

as well as

/dev/cdrom1

(becuase I have a cd-r and dvd rom drive) both don't work and that is how they are in /dev. I also tried:

/mnt/cdrom and /mnt/cdrom1

becuase that is how they are in /mnt but I got nothing.

You can't mount an audio CD as you would a normal CD.

What happens when you press the eject button, second from the left on the bottom, in grip? Does the cd tray come out? If so, it is configured properly for your device.

Can you find a way to disable the gnome CD player from automagically running when you put a CD in?

Well thats funny. I left the cd in and I gave Gnome Cd player the path / and it fliped but I just quit it. then I went to the menu and found grip from there and ran it. It found the cd and everything on it and i'm ripping it now. One problem, when it plays, i don't hear anything. But I don't really care cause i'll just rip and and play it with xmms. Thanks guys.

I was also wondering how to burn mp3's with x-cd-roast. Your instructions worked perfectly. Thanks.

Is the process the same if you want to burn data to CD-R with x-cd-roast? First create the iso, then burn it, right?

I always used a perl script for creating .wav or .mp3 files and then burning. But i can't find my script anymore. So I've been burning data and .wav files with mkisofs then cdrecord commands on the command line.

Cheers.

glad that helped. yeah that's the s ame process for burning just about anything (data). the only thing that would make it really different is burning something bootable.
