Ok, I got a new box with Windows on it and, as I dislike Windows in the extreme, load linux on it. I partition my 60GB drive with 50 for windows and 10 for linux (more than it needs). The install goes fine, but LILO dosn't load on boot, it goes to Windows Melennium Edition (I refuse to say Windows ME). Red Hat 7 loads fine off the LILO floppy. When checking the install logs I read the error, greater than 1024 something (can't remember, its like cyllenders, heads, or sectors, has to do with my Hard Drive), then it says greater than something else too (has to do with HD). Is there anyway to get LILO to work? Do I need another boot manager? If so what? I have boot magic, will that work?
Thanks,
Falcon

That version of LILO needs to be installed within the first 1024 clusters of the harddrive, else it won't work. Get the latest version of LILO and install it, it overcomes the 1024 problem. That should fix it.

To make things easier, you can make a LILO boot disk that will boot Linux for you.

All right, I remember that now. To make LILO work without upgrading, I have to mkae my Windows Partition less than eight gig, then mount put the Linux partition (Lilo goes at the begining of the Linux partition right? So as long as it is in the first 8 it should work?) Then mount the rest as a secondary drive. Or is it easier to upgrade LILO, I made a boot disk so I can boot linux, where do I get the upgrade and where do I install it?
Thanks

I think it would be easier to upgrade LILO than having to reinstall/partition everything. Which distribution are you running?

I am using RedHat 7.0, where can I get a new version of LILO and how do I install it?

rpmfind.net should have it. I think the latest one is 21.6

I am running Red Hat 7 and had the same problem. As well as I didn't want to trash my windows (just yet) and lilo was installed in to the MBR in the install, so now I am left with no windows and lilo crashing at boot. The easiest way I found aroud it was the boot disk. I repaired my MBR with fdisk /mbr and repaired my win 2k install in total about 25 mins. Now I run all 3 happily.
