Just looking for a good graphic-editing program, the Gimp would be good, but for the fact that it is devoid of even the most basic functions (e.g. drawing a circle) so it takes 3 steps to do things that should take 1. So does anyone know of a good alternative?

There is nothing to compare to Illustrator or Freehand. Not even close. You'll need Windows for vector illustration.

Illustrator and freehand run on linux??? I'm not really so much looking for tools such as these, more editing suites like Photoshop, but they must run on linux.

Yeah, I was kind of upset over not being able to simply draw a circle. Its probably possible, I just haven't found it yet! If any one has figured it out, please share.

openoffice has a vector graphics program that is actually quite nice, supporting transparencies and other nice features.
You could also try
http://sketch.sourceforge.net/
http://sodipodi.sourceforge.net/

For those curious, whenever I have needed to draw vectors in Gimp, I just use Filters/Render/Gfig... Hope that helps.

I don't really know how this turned into a thread about vector images, but that's not at all what i'm looking for, just a nice image-editing program.

Sorry but your thread has been hijacked and diverted to Vectorania. You will be released unharmed after we land.
I guess for what you want, Gimp is the best linux has to offer.

at first i felt the same way you did when i first started using gimp. the strange thing is once you understand how to use gimp then you will love using it. besides what can you do with photoshop that you can't do with gimp. the gimp program is the most powerfull graphics program out there that is free.
as for drawing circles; i can do it in just one step. what three steps are you using to draw a circle.
once you learn gimp then you will understand it is very powerfull. the problem i think you are having is you don't fully understand gimp and how to use it. then you are looking for something that is basic enough to understand.
go to freshmeat.net and type in edit graphics and see what is out there.

Well, I asked some "hardcore" gimp users and they just tried to convince me that circles were unimportant :| I can't find a circle or shape tool, how do you draw one?
It also doesn't have some of the filters I remember loving back when I was on windows (e.g. Difference clouds).

maybe I'm answering the wrong question here, but to make circles I do exactly what I do in Photoshop. I use the "select circle"-tool, and then use stroke which is under "edit".

Well I havn't tried it, or heard of anyone trying it, but if you used photoshop and you liked it a lot, couldn't you use it with wine? I don't really see why not, unless it is too complicated for wine, then you might want to get winex which can handle directx games so it might be powerful enough for photoshop. But I suggest what the others have, learn gimp.

wine/winex won't run photoshop.
you can run it in the new version of crossover that will be released soon.

Well, this is my point, there are a few methods of drawing circles in the gimp, but none as simple as the PS way (click shape tool, select circle). I suppose I could just use a basic paint tool for the basics of the image and then do the effects in the gimp...

www.frankscorner.org has some tutorials on running Photoshop/Fireworks/Freehand in wine.
I'm not sure if they work or not, but its worth a shot.

I can get them to run, they're just very slow :P

Crossover office 2 will run Photoshop no probs.........a few things that have worked for me are win4lin (probably the best for PS), VmWare, ELXlinux (they have a modified Wine that apparantly runs PS7)
Of Course, the Gimp is great but it's nice to have PS running in Linux too ;)
