Hey all, just a quick question. Underneath Windows it is necassary to Defragment your disk maybe once every two weeks or so. Underneath Linux, is it that there simply aren't any tools to perform this function, or is it that it isn't necassary. Also, if it isn't necassary, why? Any replies would help to shut me up! :D :p

In short, it is not necessary, as the filesystems linux uses maintain themselves in the way they store data.

Just search for defrag or defragmentation on these forums and you will see many posts asking the same question.

I'll second that. You're not in Kansas any more.

You'll probably find less than 3% fragmentation on any ext2/3 partition you have--at the worst.

That doesn't make much of a case for de-fragging a drive.
