Some battles when they were won were given special names e.g. VE Day, is victory in Europe day and VJ Day is victory in Japan day, then does it follow that we have VI Day as victory in Iraq day?

Only I was wondering because I prefer to use Emacs and not VI.

And how do VI users feel to be associated with the conflict?

with ww2, ther were definite days that the germans and japanese surrendured. in iraq ther will be no single day when they surrender. no definite day, no vi day.

Although drummer boy may be right, VI Day would be kinda cool. Not just because it's vi as in vi, but because we could finally be sure it's over for the better.

Now that your 'great' president has declared combat over in Iraq, maybe we should call May 01 2003 'Victory in Iraq Day' or VI Day?

Ummm, does this topic really matter to the linux community?

I guess it's a pretty political question, and I don't know if here politics should be discussed - unless they're linux politics. :)

It was intended to be vaguely humourous, but the thread does talk about VI, which is a unix/linux topic, and the thread is in Off Topic /random.

There are a great many posts that do not 'really matter to the linux community', (like your reply).

Precisely because we are a community we should be able to discuss these things.

Okay pal, gotcha wrong. Sorry about that. :) I guess I took you for serious because there is no smiley in your initial post. :)

I'm a European/Swiss who has lived on both sides of the Atlantic, and I observed with increasing concern lately how transatlantic relationships started to get worse. As Justlinux is about helping each other internationally, I guess we're a living proof concerning international cooperation. :)

Here's the place to ask...

I'll leave it for the time being, but if it turns into a political discussion or non-tech-related ramble I'm going to have to close it.

How about we turn it into a "Bring back the old /dev/random" rant thread? :-D

I really can't see how we take up that much HD space and bandwidth with our various political discussions. I mean, a few posts over which side is right in the war on Iraq or a few on religion can't be too demanding, eh?

Oh, and just to add to the discussion, it would be really cool for Linux/Unix users if there was a VI day. We could have VI day Linux festivals! :p

I was under the impression that Bush deliberately didn't say the war was over, seeing as there are still military troops in Iraq, and there are still skirmishes in the areas the US does not control.

On topic, however, I prefer emacs over Vi. I like minimal, and Vi is a lot smaller than emacs, but after months of trying, I just couldn't get used to Vi's modes system of working :)

Stween, you don't need all that (modes, I mean). I don't use those either, but I still use vi daily.

I also use nano occasionally. I don't like the way it scrolls, but it is easier to use sometimes, IMO.

As for the war, since when do hollywood celebs lecture on greed and vanity?

YEAH!! I want /dev/random to revert to it's old way, so any schmuck can come wander in and post how much they hate the USA and then go MIA after starting a thread with something simple like "I think the US is dumb, GW is a cowboy and they just want oil" that generates about 250 replies.

I kind of find it funny how, even with /dev/random only for tech related issues, some people still find clever ways to bash the US without breaking the rules. After all, since VI would represent US victory, how do vi users like being associated with the victory of such an evil, oppressive, godless, stupid, mentally ill, gay, and capitalit country?

Yep... time to quit using vi.

Maybe we could have a VI week :)

I agree with you carrja99, even though I'm the one who would take the bait and attempt to argue with them.

I liked the old /dev/random, but this one is easier. I'm no longer glued to it and happier because of it.
