<sarcastic>Linux 9, can someone tell me whats wrong with this?</sarcastic>

http://linuxcentral.com/catalog/index.php3?prod_code=L000-154

it's Redhat 9 which i may download for a "plug and play" distro (Mandrake 9.1 was a massive letdown)

but why does it only say "Linux 9" which at first gobsmacked me coz i though ooh, kernel 9.0.0 (not really). is this a typo or something, or have redhat dropped the "redhat" as well as the ".0"

then i noticed the "This is the downloadable version of Linux 9 Support for this product is not provided by Red Hat Software." at the bottom

Don't complain to RH about that, complain to Linux Central about that. You're looking at their site, not RH's.

The reason they left out "Redhat" from the title is that Redhat sue anyone who uses their trademark. The fact that people are forced to sell Redhat as simply "Linux" is, from their point of view, a nice side effect of this policy, because it leads to the public believing Redhat to be the only Linux distribution available.

i see no need to complin, look at the price of those three CDroms, it is fair, of cource if you need the suppport you can allways pay much more for the boxed set at Redhat's online store, or at a local computer store...

for those with slow dialups that cant or wont do those HUGE ISO downloads then LinuxCentral is a bargain...

and as far as getting updates there is allways Ximian's red-carpet or apt-get for Redhat, both free & anonymous...

A while back, Red Hat mentioned that they don't want people to use Red Hat and the logos for burned isos of Red Hat's distrobution supposedly since people thought that they were entitled to tech support and such from Red Hat. So, Linux Central sells "Red Hat compatible" distros. Here is Red Hat's trademark policies. http://www.redhat.com/about/corporate/trademark/.

Exactly. Some people believed they were buying boxed sets through a distributor. I am still wondering why they would simply call it Linux 9. I'm guessing Pink Hat Linux didn't go over too well.

lol. I actually was wondering yesterday why someone (except Red Hat, of course) doesn't sell copies of Red Hat under that name yet. :D

Actually PinkHat Linux isn't some sppof, It's a real distro. Basically some morons sell copies of RedHat Linux they burned after downloading the ISOs. To avoid confusion (and the wrath of RH) they called the distro PinkHat Linux.

Of course people are stupid and when the heard about this they started printing articles on forum that RH was changing the name of their distro. I think the problem was that Red Hat doesn't like "play on words".

http://www.redhat.com/about/corporate/trademark/page4.html

C. "Plays On Words" And Other Actions That May Cause Confusion Are Also Prohibited
There is no connection between the words "Red Hat" and Linux-based computer software, products and services other than the association created by the Red HatŪ brand of Linux-based products and services. Red Hat, Inc. has created this association by spending time and money to establish goodwill in its products, services and trademarks. As a result, you may not use the words "Red Hat" (together or individually), words with similar connotations or pronunciations, translations of those words, or other words that may cause confusion in the market as a trademark for your products. Some examples of prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, "Red Cap" Linux, "Sombrero Rojo" ("Red Hat" translated into Spanish) Linux, "Redd Hatte" Linux, "RH" Linux, and "Green Hat" Linux.

I know of another site that's similar to Linux Central by way of also selling the downloadable versions of Linux distros for people that don't or can't download them themselves, and they've solved this issue by calling their Red Hat distro Pink Tie instead. They're very specific about the fact that it's compatible with Red Hat, and that they don't call it Red Hat because of the afore mentioned issues, but they never actually use the term Red Hat on their site... they just allude to it in a quite obvious manner.

I'm getting sick of hearing about 'Linux 9...' That's a bunch of B.S. Why not just force people to say "You are not entitled to support from Red Hat" on their sites? I still agree its a marketing scheme so they think Red Hat is the only linux... Bah.
